Động này được hình thành cách đây khoảng 2 đến 5 triệu năm bởi nước sông làm xói mòn đá vôi bên dưới ngọn núi. Nó chứa một số cây măng đá cao nhất thế giới – cao đến 70 mét. Hang rộng hơn 200m, cao 150m và dài gần 9km với những hang động đủ lớn để đặt cả con đường bên trong. Hang Sơn Đoong được công nhận là hang động rộng nhất thế giới bởi BCRA (Hiệp hội nghiên cứu hang động Anh) và được bầu chọn là một trong những hang đẹp nhất trên Trái Đất bởi BBC ( Tổng phát thanh truyền hình nước Anh).
